NATO PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY DELEGATION

At the invitation of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), a delegation of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly visited Beijing and Shanghai from 11 to 16 September 2011. The delegation, composed of 20 parliamentarians from 12 NATO member states, was led by Mr. Rainer Stinner (Germany), Chairman of the Sub-Committee on NATO Partnerships, and Mr. Julio Miranda Calha (Portugal), Vice-Chairman of the Defence and Security Committee. Mr. Yu Hongjun, Vice Minister in charge of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, and Mme. Fu Ying, Vice Foreign Minister and Mr. Yang Wenchang, President of CPIFA, met with the delegation respectively. The delegation also had roundtable talks with senior officials of the Ministry of National Defence and scholars from the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR) and Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS). The two sides exchanged views on China’s international engagement and ways to jointly cope with global and regional security challenges. As part of their programme, members of the delegation visited the 6th Armored Division of the PLA Beijing Military Area Command and Huawei Shanghai R&D Centre.
