A 32-member U.S. Senate Delegation Visits China

       At the invitation of Vice Chairman Lu Yongxiang of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), a 32-member U.S. Senate Delegation led by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada), paid a visit to Beijing, Tianjin, Langfang, Xi'an and Chengdu successfully from April 20 to 25, 2011. The Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs received the delegation. The bipartisan delegation included other 9 senior senators ------ Dick Durbin (D-Illinois), Charles Schumer (D-New York), Richard Shelby (R-Alabama), Barbara Boxer (D-California), Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming), Frank Lautenberg (D-New Jersey), Johnny Isakson (R-Georgia), Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) and Michael Bennet (D-Colorado).

       During the visit in Beijing, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the NPC, Vice President Xi Jinping, Vice Premier Wang Qishan, Vice Chairman Lu Yongxiang of the Standing Committee of the NPC, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Governor Zhou Xiaochuan of the People's Bank of China, met with the delegation or held a banquet in honor of the delegation respectively. The delegation took the high-speed train from Beijing to Tianjin, and visited the ENN headquarter based in Langfang. During the visit in Xi'an, the delegation visited the Institute of Earth Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the US Applied Materials Engineering and Development Center. During the visit in Chengdu, Mayor Ge Honglin met with delegation. The guests also visited the South-West Airport Development Zone, Apollo Solar Company and Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center and participated a round-table discussion with the US good-will volunteers of Sichuan University.
       The delegation exchanged views with the Chinese side on Sino-US relations, Sino-US inter-parliamentary exchange, Sino-US economic and trade relations, international and regional security, human rights and clean energy, etc. Senator Reid said that the world needs US and China, the two largest economies, to work together to cope with global challenges and that the two countries have to maintain communication and build mutual trust. The senator also expressed the view that the US Congress attaches great importance to the Sino-US relations and that the senate delegation's visit to China is conducive to the improvement of the bilateral relationship.
