President Wang Chao Visits New Zealand

From May 26 to 30, 2024, Mr. Wang Chao, President of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs led a delegation to Wellington and Auckland of New Zealand. The delegation co-hosted the Second Meeting of the China-New Zealand Track Two Dialogue with the New Zealand China Council (NZCC), met with Mr. John Key, former Prime Minister, Ms. Deborah Geels, Deputy Secretary of the Minisry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. Tim van de Molen, Chairperson of the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee, Mr. John McKinnon, Chair of the NZCC and former Ambassador to China, and Mr. Tony Browne, former Ambassador to China, and held a round-table discussion with the New Zealand Asia Institute of the University of Auckland, exchanging views on China-New Zealand relations, economic and trade cooperation, international and regional situation and other issues of common interest.

The China-New Zealand Track Two Dialogue Mechanism was established in 2022. The Chinese attendees at the second meeting of the Dialogue include: Ms. Jiang Xiaojuan, Professor at University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and former Deputy Secretary-General of the State Council, Ms. Shi Ling, Vice President of the CPIFA, Ms. Jiang Xiaoming, Director-General of the Department for North American and Oceanian Affairs of the CPIFA, Mr. Li Yong, Vice Chairman of the Expert Committee of the China Association of International Trade, Mr. Chen Hong, Director of the New Zealand Studies Center of East China Normal University, Mr. Zhou Mi, Deputy Director of the Institute of American and Oceanian Studies of Chinese Academy of 
International Trade and Economic Cooperation, and Ms. Wu Yan, Deputy Director of the Academy of International and Regional Studies of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

The New Zealand side is headed by Amb. John McKinnon and the attendees include: Mr. Simon Murdoch, former Secretary of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr. David Capie, Director of the Center for Strategic Studies of Victoria University of Wellington, Mr. Alex Tan, Professor at University of Canterbury, Mr. Jason Young, Director of the New Zealand Contemporary China Research Centre of Victoria University of Wellington, Mr. Chris Lipscombe, National President of the New Zealand China Friendship Society, Ms. Marion Crawshaw, Senior Fellow of the Centre for Strategic Studies of Victoria University of Wellington, and Mr. Alistair Crozier, Executive Director of the NZCC and former Consul-General of New Zealand to Chengdu.
