From March 9 to 12, 2023, the CPIFA sent a delegation to New Delhi to attend the annual plenary meeting of the Trilateral Commission. Amb. Zhang Yan, former Chinese Ambassador to India, Prof. Rong Ying, Vice President of the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), delivered speeches and participated in the discussions respectively under topics on supply chain and digital future as special guests of the Chinese Group of the Trilateral Commission. Amb. Zhang Jiming, Vice President of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA) and Executive Committee Member of the Trilateral Commission representing the Chinese Group, delivered a speech titled "China on a New Journey of Development: a Blessing for the World" during a special dialogue session.
Zhang Yan pointed out that a safe and stable supply chain is crucial to the global economy. At present, apart from the COVID-19 and the Ukraine crisis, the most prominent impact on the global supply chain comes from the interference and disruption of protectionism, unilateralism and power politics on normal international economic and scientific cooperation. All unilateral sanctions, decoupling and technological bullying must be stopped. The Belt and Road Initiative plays a positive role in ensuring the security and stability of the global supply chain.
Rong Ying briefed the audience on China's digital development and its future plan. He said, China will actively participate in global digital governance, unswervingly promote the planning and construction of digital China, digital economy and digital society in an integrated manner, thus playing a positive role in promoting the narrowing of the digital divide in developing countries and enabling digitalization to better serve the economic and social development.
Zhang Jiming expressed that the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China held last October set the course and mapped out the blueprint for China’s development in the next five years and beyond. China embarks on a new journey toward the Second Centenary Goal: building China into a modern socialist country in all respects and advancing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation through a Chinese path to modernization. He introduced the historic achievements of China's development in the past decade, and explained the characteristics and essential requirements of Chinese modernization, emphasizing that China's new development is surely a great certainty amid the mounting uncertainties of the world today. The world will share the opportunities in China's high-quality, open and peaceful development, as well as the opportunities in common development.
The Trilateral Commission was established in 1973, and this year marks its 50th anniversary. Over the past 50 years, the Trilateral Commission has expanded from the United States, Europe, and Japan alone to an international non-governmental organization composed of three regional groups, namely North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. It participates in international affairs through hosting various conferences and academic studies. More than 280 former politicians and leaders from financial institutions, companies and think tanks from over 40 countries around the world attended this annual plenary meeting. Several incumbent ministers from different countries attended the meeting and delivered speeches.
