At the invitation of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), US Senator Jeff Bingaman (D, NM), Chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee of the Senate, paid a visit to Beijing and Shenzhen from April 3 to 7.
During his visit in Beijing, Mr. Wan Gang, Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Han Wenke, President of the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, Mr. Li Junfeng, Chief of the National Climate Strategy Center, Mr. Li Qingkui, Vice President of the China Huadian Corporation, and Amb. Lu Shumin, Vice President of CPIFA, met with him respectively. The two sides exchanged views on China-US relations and the bilateral cooperation on clean energy. In Shenzhen, Senator Bingaman met with relevant business leaders and visited the BYD Corporation.
Senator Bingaman noted on the visit that for the US and China as the two largest energy consuming countries in the world, conducting pragmatic cooperation in the fields of optimizing energy mix, improving energy efficiency, and developing and utilizing new energy, will not only contribute to the economic restructuring of both countries, but will also benefit the protection of the environment that human beings commonly rely on. He also expressed that in the light of a series of bills passed by the US congress in recent years to encourage clean energy development, the US side would continue to strengthen communication and coordination with the Chinese side on legislation and policy issues related with energy development, and to promote relevant enterprises in both countries to deepen mutually-beneficial cooperation by bringing into play their own advantages.
