Former Prime Minister of Ireland Bertie Ahern Visits China

At the invitation of the Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign Affairs (CPIFA), Mr. Bertie Ahern, former Prime Minister of Ireland visited Beijing, Anhui and Guiyang from 12 to 17 July, 2011.
In Beijing, Mr. Ahern with Mr. Chen Gang, Secretary of CPC Chaoyang District Committee, exchanged views on ways to strengthen social, cultural and education cooperation between China and Ireland. Mr. Ahern attended the signing ceremonies of the Letter of Intent on Friendly Cooperation and Exchanges between Chaoyang District Government and the Ireland-China Cooperation Council and the Agreement on Academic Cooperation and Exchanges between Beijing International Studies University andDublin Institute of Technology.
In Guiyang, Mr. Ahern attended the opening ceremony of the Eco-Forum Global, Guiyang at which he delivered a keynote speech on Green Changes towards Eco-civilization: Opportunities and Challenges. Mr. Zhao Kezhi, Governor of Guizhou Province, and Mr. Wang Zhengfu, Chairman of Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, met with Mr. Ahern. The two sides exchanged views on Sino-Irish relations and eco-civilization.
Mr. Ahern expressed his recognition on the efforts and achievements by the Chinese governments at all levels including Guizhou Provincial Government in tackling climate change and environmental protection. He said that in coping with challenges and realizing green and sustainable development, Ireland was ready to share experience with China in promoting eco-innovation and eco-civilization.
